ESTATE PLANNING:  WILLS, TRUSTS, AND PROBATE

Planning one's estate is something we all put off, for a variety of reasons.  People tend to think they have plenty of time ahead of them to do it or that they don't have enough assets to worry about.  In truth, however, even people of modest means can benefit from timely asset management and planning for the latter part of life.  Also, powers of attorney should be in place at all times so that someone will have the authority to make decisions for you in the event of an emergency.  An alternate plan for the care of minor children should be in place from the moment of their births.  Finally, even small estates must be probated or managed upon one's death (and at a time that loved ones feel least up to the task.)  Having one's affairs clearly in order can make this process much easier.  For more complex estates or in situtations where there is no appropriate beneficiary to assume such duties, you may wish an attorney to oversee these obligations.
